Online vs Traditional RPG

An RPG game is generally classified as a wide-ranging family of games in which players assume the roles of characters, or take control of one or more avatars, in a fantasy land or sorts . Within the prescribed environment the character will prosper or fail according to the systems rules

Originally these games transcended from paper based games or board games; up to now the recent surge in online games has made this a secondary pastime in terms of uptake and popularity. Barriers to entry have been lowered based on the ubiquitous nature of the internet and the uptake in online game usage. Most households now have at least one PC for example.

One such online game which franchise runs into the millions of dollars per annum is World of Warcraft or (WoW). This RPG game has done what others have particularly failed to do in the past: cross boundaries into a more widely accepted format of entertainment. No longer are RPG games only enjoyed by the vitamin D lacking basement dwellers, but encompasses CEO’s, working professionals, working mums, school kids, university educated adults and many more.

Some basic facets exist when it comes to defining what makes an RPG game:

  1. They have to allow customization in some form, whether is on the character’s name or in the user statistics.
  2. You get to choose how the story develops.
  3. You get to tailor the look and feel of your character
  4. There’s some kind of levelling or experience formality.

There are also a multitude of online game portals which offer RPG adventure games, such as Dragon Fable online etc. These are defined as casual games. What originally set this genre apart was Dungeons and Dragons however.
